Essence or Jing in Chinese Medicine is the organic substance that forms the basis of growth, reproduction and development and ageing. As we grow, it controls growth of bones, hair, teeth, and normal brain activity. During our teenage years it accounts for the reproductive function and fertility. As we continue to age the essence naturally declines leading to the weakening sexual energies and fertility. Our essence forms the basis for our constitutional strength too. This constitutional strength forms our defensive energies against exterior pathogens, energetic levels, and foundation for all that is us. A good constitution can be seen in people with longevity within their families, while weaker essence can be seen with premature graying of hair, tooth lose, and weak bones.
Essence is composed of three distinct forms of qi or energy. These topics will be discussed in future discussion about essence.
