Hepatitis C is called chronic active hepatitis. It can be acquired through blood, sex, or perinatally. Hep C accounts for 60%-70% of all chronic Hepatitis and 30% of liver cirrhosis in the US. 8,000 to 10,000 people die annually from the complications of Hep C in the US. After being contracted, a person can remain asymptomatic for years, but 20% of all people carrying Hep C develop cirrhosis within 10 to 20 years.

Current Western standard of care comes in two treatment forms. The first consists of alpha-interferon therapy. This therapy however can cause many neuropsychiatric side effects. The other treatment is a combination of interferon and ribavirin.

Treating Hep C with Chinese medicine can be done. There are many herbal ingredients to treat many of the different Western protocol for gauging the presents of Hep C in the body. Specific herbs can be giving to help lower the Liver enzyme levels taken on SGPT and SGOT, regulate transaminase, protect liver function and regenerate liver cells, and treat fibrosis of the liver. Each case, as with all Chinese medicine cases, is treated as a specific individual case that needs to be solved. No blanket medication or treatment can resolve this ailment. Each person needs to be assessed for their own specific treatment of this ailment. There are some common underlying manifestation that can be seen in most cases, but care needs to be taken to treat correctly.

Chinese medicine can help treat individuals with Hepatitis C. The testing of blood before, during , and after a series of treatments will speak volumes for what we can help with. Chinese medicine works well for many different ailments.

Pain is TCM is caused by blocked energy within the body. Where ever there is pain, the is a blockage of some sort. These blockage inhibit the flow of the qi, or energy, of the body. This can cause many things to happen, the most common result that manifest is pain. These blockages can be caused by physical trauma, improper diet, emotions, stress, medication, and environmental factors.

We treat pain in a few ways with TCM. The basic underlying treatment principle is to remove the blockage and promote healing. When we use acupuncture to relieve pain, we can use certain points that are local to the pain. These local points focus on creating movement around the injuried or painful area. Additionally, we can use points that along the same meridian to move the energy along that channel, but not have to be around the specific area. There are empirical points on the body that move energy through the body that can be used too.

Herbal medicine is used to help create movement in the body just like the acupuncture. The herbs can be used to help with the pain associated with the blockage. Pain relieving and blood moving herbal formulas are used prevalently throughout TCM to help remedy these situations.

Diabetes is a syndrome in which there are abnormal levels of insulin secretion, elevated glucose levels, retinopathy, neuropathy, and accelerated atherosclerosis. Diabetes comes in different type that most people are familiar with: Type I, Type II, and gestational. Type Iis insulin dependant. Seventy-five percent of Type 1 diabetics have antibodies to their own pancreatic cells as a result of a viral infection. Some of the viral diseases associated with Type 1 are hepatitis, rubella, Epstein-Barr viruses, herpes virus 6. Type II diabetics don’t need insulin to survive, but often are dependant upon insulin injections to regulate blood glucose levels. The main cause of Type II can be narrowed to diet, obesity, stress, and/or viral infection.

In Chinese medicine, these ailments are separated into two main patterns based on the age of the onset. In juvenile on-set diabetes, there is a deficiency within the body that keeps it from working properly. While in adult onset is related to heat within the body. This heat can start with what is called stomach fire. This causing much hunger and inhibits the other paired organ to the stomach, the spleen, from functioning properly. The spleen is also damaged by diet. Foods high in sugar, sweets, and fatty foods diminish the spleens ability to regulate fluids in the body. The heat within the body persists and carries deeper in the body affecting other organs causing further problems.

Acupuncture, herbal medicine, and diet therapy can be used to correct the imbalance created by this situation. Diabetics must eliminate refined sugar, avoid junk food, eat snacks of protein between meals, and eat complex carbohydrates like whole wheat, fruits, and vegetables because they release carbs more slowly in the body. The acupuncture and herbs look at removing the heat within the body and/or the body to balance it back out.

Acid reflux or Reflux Esophagitis is a situation the occurs from reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This causes an inflammation of the gastroesophageal tract and discomfort for the sufferer. The chief complaint with acid reflux isheartburn with or without fluids coming up into the mouth. The standard of care for is situation consists of raising the head during sleeping, dietary changes to avoid additional acid secretion, and anti-acids.

The main pattern in TCM that causes this imbalance is the Liver invading Spleen/Stomach. The easiest way that I can explain this through the engendering cycle of the five elements. In TCM, there are five elements that exist: water, wood, earth, metal, and fire. All these elements can either create or destroy each other. On the creation side (engendering), Wood creates fire, fire creates earth, earth creates metal, metal creates water, water creates wood. The destruction cycle works as wood controls earth, earth controls water, water controls fire, fire controls metal, and metal control wood. The cycle of these elements is a basic understanding in TCM. All the organs are associated to one of these five elements. The liver is associated with the element of wood, while the Spleen and Stomach are associated with earth. In the destructive cycle, Wood controls earth. An imbalance of the liver is caused in many ways, the most common is anger. When an imbalance is created in the liver is often goes across to invade the Spleen and Stomach. When this happens, the stomach and spleen energies are pushed in the opposite direction of normal operation. The stomach energies are supposed to descend in the body, and the invading liver energies cause this stomach energy to rise in the body. When it rises in the body it goes back up through the esophagus and cause possible vomiting.

Acupuncture and herbal therapy can work individually or together to solve this problem. When can easily calm the liver to stop it from invading the stomach and spleen. This resolves the issue instead of treating the symptoms. Acid reflux can be resolved completely to allow the patient to live a normal life and resolve daily activities without any concerns.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused when the median nerve that travels through the tunnel between the wrist bones is compressed by tendons that run through the same opening. This syndrome is usally caused by repetative operations by the hands that cause cumulative trauma to the area. The first noticable signs of CTS is an uncomfortable feeling in the wrists that can also be accompanied by tingling. These symptoms usually show up at night or while sleeping. The tingling sensation usually progresses into numbness in the hands and lose of dexerity.

Western medical treatments are seperated into surgical and nonsurgical treatments. The nonsurgical treatments include wrist-splints, NSAIDS, rest, and steroid injections. The surigical treatment relieves the tension in the tunnel to allow for the nerves to work properly.

Chinese medicine categorizes this ailment as a blockage that malnouishes the sinews and vessels. This blockage, the tightening of the sinews, slows down or stops the energy and blood from reaching the affected areas on the other side of the blockage. This causes the malnoushiment of the areas on ther other side of the blockage. Additionally, the blockage can back up the arm causing further pain that radiates upward. When using acupuncture to resolve this blockage and pain, we treatment into the tunnel itself. There are systemic points that are used to move the qi or energy throughout the body, while working locally with the wrist(s). Herbal medicine can be applied additionally to relieve pain and help resolve the blockage so the noushiment can get to the hands.

When communicating with a patient about their diagnosis in Chinese Medicine a common word that get misunderstood is phlegm. The term phlegm is used in the western world as the thick mucus that blocks the lungs and can be seen upon coughing some out. This is a form of phlegm in Chinese medicine, but only one simple, tangible form of it. Phlegm in TCM is nothing more than congealed fluids in the body. It presents itself when the energys in the body, or Qi, become depleted or depressed. This slowing of the fluids causing them to congeal into a thicker fluid. An additional way that phlegm can be formed is by adding heat or cold to the internal equation. Fluids can thicken if internal heat is applied over time, similar to reducing method when cooking. Likewise, cold can congeal fluids just the same. Cold causes things to contract and pull in, which causes fluids to thicken.

Phlegm has a tendency to wreck havoc in the body. It can be the source of a internal pattern or can be cause by an internal pattern. Phlegm can form soft, round, rubbery nodules in and on the body. It can be hidden and lying in wait until stirred up by other pathogens within the body. This situation can other in asthma patients who shown no signs of issues, but when they have an episode they can fill up with fluids. Mental health issues can be affect by phlegm within the body. In TCM, there is a pattern diagnosis where phlegm mists the portals of the heart. This basically means that the person’s mental faculties can be hindered by phlegm, not allowing the emotions to function properly.

Phlegm has become a massive problem in the western world based on our diets that are high in sugars and sweets, cold, and greasy foods. Ice cream is the single handed worst food for someone battling with phlegm because it is cold, greasy, and full of sugar. The greasy foods that are prevelant and inexpensive cause issues with the organs in the body that metabolism foods correctly causing an imbalance in water metabolism in the body. This leads to formation of dampness and phlegm.

Phlegm can be treated with acupuncture and herbal medicine. There are specific formulas design to remove the dampness and phlegm from the body, while correcting the internal imbalance that allow them to form. The resolution of phlegm is based upon dietary changes in addition to the TCM treatments. The diet can be used to heal the body as well as harm it.
