In 1987, The American Medical Association recognized fibromyalgia as a true illness and cause of disability. Characterized by chronic, widespread, muscle aching and pain with stiffness accompanied by insomnia, fatigue, and depression. It generally affects women between the ages of 20-50 of age. Many illness need to be differentiated from to separate fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) from other diseases like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus. FMS is neither inflammatory, progressive, or degenerative. It has a Biomedical diagnosis as unknown etiology which is causes by complex relationships between the body and the mind.

People who suffer from FMS are usually, but not exclusively, on pain medication as the main part of their treatment. The source, since unknown, is not treated to resolve the situation inside the body. In Chinese medicine we work at resolving the source of this complex situation to resolve the problem. Not all FMS can be pigeon holed as from the same source, and thus we treat the person not the disease. the causes in TCM can range from disharmony’s between specific organs, fluid and qi deficiencies in the body, excess heat with dampness, constitution energy deficiencies in the body, or combinations of all the mentioned items. I know this sound complex without the understanding of Chinese medicine and all the various parts and pieces, but rest assured that all these things can be treated to help relieve the pain and keep it away.

Acupuncture in conjunction with herbal therapies and other modalities are used to resolve the problem at it’s source to help the patient. FMS is a complex problem that can take months if not years to resolve, but it can be done. Pain medication has its obvious limitations, we can help people slowly make that transition back to a healthy lifestyle and regain their lives.
